Assessment and Referral
When patients are referred to the Cancer Survivorship Clinic, we start with a full health assessment, because it’s important to monitor cancer patients for late effects after they’ve completed active treatment. Your care team specialist will schedule any regular screenings you should have for early detection. Care Programs
These are a few of the programs our survivorship clinic specialists may refer you to if they’re the right fit:
Genetic Counseling
When several members of a family have had the same or related cancers, there is an increased chance that the family has a hereditary risk for cancer. The only way to know for sure is by completing a hereditary cancer risk assessment with a genetic counselor. The goal of genetic counseling is to help you and your family understand:
- The chance that you and your family’s history of cancer is hereditary.
- Whether or not genetic testing would be helpful for you and your family.
- How your family history and genetic test results may change your cancer screening and risk reducing options.
Integrative Care
We help you reach your best health by providing ways for you to engage in your healing. Integrative care is a doctor-directed program that applies the fields of nutrition, stress management, physical fitness, massage therapy, acupuncture and many other non-traditional therapies. Along with your traditional cancer care plan, integrative care may help to:
- Manage symptoms, such as pain, nausea and fatigue.
- Improve quality of life.
- Enhance the success of your cancer care treatment plan.
Lymphedema Therapy
Lymphedema is a collection of lymph fluid that causes swelling in the arms, legs, breasts, neck and groin. Our lymphedema program tests for early signs of lymphedema, and uses early intervention to prevent swelling and other symptoms. You could be tested for lymphedema before your surgery or treatment, and during follow-up visits.
We test for lymphedema with the SOZO® device. It looks like a scale, but it has spots to place your hands and feet. You will not feel the SOZO test working, and it only takes 30 seconds to complete. If your score is above normal, you may have lymphedema. We will then refer you to our lymphedema specialists. They can help reduce your risk of developing chronic lymphedema.
Your doctor will review the results of your screening and offer a treatment plan that meets your needs. Your care team may refer you to physical therapy treatments to reduce lymphatic fluid buildup. This can reduce swelling to your arms or legs.
Your care team may also suggest treatments that can be done from home, which may include exercise programs and compression techniques, such as self-massage and compression garments.
